چکیده

This paper discusses the factors known to influence the performance of automatic speech recognizers and describes test procedures for characterizing their performance. It is directed toward all the stakeholders in the speech community (researchers, vendors and users) consequently, the discussion of test procedures is not directed toward the needs of specific users to demonstrate the performance characteristics of anyone specific algorithmic approach or particular product. It relies significantly on contributions from an emerging COllsensus standards activity, especially material developed within the IEEE Working Group on Speech I/O Performance Assessment.

Statistical properties of infant-directed versus adult-directed speech: insights from speech recognition.

Previous studies have shown that infant-directed speech ('motherese') exhibits overemphasized acoustic properties which may facilitate the acquisition of phonetic categories by infant learners. It has been suggested that the use of infant-directed data for training automatic speech recognition systems might also enhance the automatic learning and discrimination of phonetic categories. This stud...

Using Articulatory Knowledge in Automatic Speech Recognition

Over the years different types of speech recognizers have been proposed and tested. During the last decade (or maybe even longer) hidden Markov models (HMMs) seem to have a better performance than other types of speech recognizers, like e.g. rule-based speech recognizers. This state of affairs has led to a gap between speech technology on the one hand, and phonetics and phonology on the other. ...

Speech-based recognition of self-reported and observed emotion in a dimensional space

The differences between self-reported and observed emotion have only marginally been investigated in the context of speech-based automatic emotion recognition. We address this issue by comparing self-reported emotion ratings to observed emotion ratings and look at how differences between these two types of ratings affect the development and performance of automatic emotion recognizers developed...

Automatic speech recognition to aid the hearing impaired: prospects for the automatic generation of cued speech.

Although great strides have been made in the development of automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, the communication performance achievable with the output of current real-time speech recognition systems would be extremely poor relative to normal speech reception. An alternate application of ASR technology to aid the hearing impaired would derive cues from the acoustical speech signal that...

Pronunciation adaptation at the lexical level

There are various kinds o f adaptation which can be used to enhance the perform ance o f automatic speech recognizers. This paper is about pronunciation adaptation at the lexical level, i.e. about m odeling pronunciation variation at the lexical level. In the early years o f automatic speech recognition (ASR) research, the amount o f pronunciation variation was lim ited by using isolated w ords...
